Pit Boss Austin XL Pros and Cons
The Pit Boss Austin XL has many great features, but it’s not perfect. Here are some pros and cons of this unit:
What I like about this pellet grill
- It has a beautiful design; the light brown color on top of the cooking chamber gives it a distinctive look. The design is simple but elegant and will be the best choice for any outdoor kitchen or backyard.
- It is well-built; the heavy-duty steel construction ensures its longevity and durability.
- You can set it and forget it, leaving it there while you do other things around the house without having to babysit while you cook.
- The second cooking shelf gives it an extra space to cook more than one thing at a time.
- The porcelain-coated grill grates retain high heat, allowing your meat to cook quickly and evenly.
- Another great feature of this pellet grill is its slope-run grease trap, which makes cleaning easier than other pellet smokers and grills.
- The hopper window lets you see how many wood pellets are left inside without opening the lid.
- The frame broiler option allows for the indirect or direct grill, which is great if you want to grill up some burgers or steak but don’t want to start with hot charcoal and then add wood pellets later.
- It has a large pellet hopper capacity that allows for long-time cooking.
- It also has a variety of cooking functions, including the ability to sear, smoke, grill, roast, and cook—even bake!
What I don’t like about this pellet grill
While the Pit Boss Austin XL has some great features, there are also some drawbacks to consider:
- There aren’t many high spaces between the grill grates and the dome lid, especially if you’re cooking a turkey.
- The wheels on this grill are not intended for off-road use. It makes moving from your backyard to your patio across grass extremely difficult.
- If you do not clean your wood pallets regularly, the excess pallet wastes covering the pellet igniter will prevent the wood pallets from properly igniting.
- The body of this grill is made of thin metal, so the wind can impact internal temperature.
- Temperature control is limited; there are no 235, 275, or other temperature settings, which is a disadvantage because certain meats require these temperatures to be cooked.
Best Features of Pit Boss Austin XL

Large cooking space
One of the best features of Pit Boss Austin XL is its massive cooking space. With a cooking space of 1,000 square inches, you can cook up to nine chicken breasts at once! This makes it easy to feed a large family without using your stovetop or oven. It’s also great for feeding friends over for dinner and keeping everyone satisfied.

The standard frame broiler
The broiler plate is a feature that makes Pit Boss Austin XL stand out from other grills. The Frame Broiler is the perfect choice for those who want to experiment with different types of cooking. You can use the flame broiler for filling meat directly and indirectly, and it’s easy to adjust the heat settings.

Heavy-duty steel construction
The Pit Boss Austin XL has a heavy-duty steel construction, making it the most durable grill you can buy. It’s incredibly sturdy and can withstand even the toughest conditions. The unit also comes with a limited 5-year warranty, which gives you peace of mind knowing that your grill will be there for you when you need it most.
All in one – sear, roast, grill, smoke, and even bake!

Pit Boss Austin XL is a powerful multi-purpose grill with everything you need to cook delicious meals. Sear, roast, grill, smoke, and even bake! Whether you’re looking to sear a steak or bake a casserole, this grill got you covered!
LED control panel
The LED control panel makes it easy to see what temperature you are cooking at and when it needs to be turned down or up for different types of food.
Accurate Gauge Thermometer

One thing special about the Austin XL is that the gauge thermometer is quite accurate compared to other units. It has a range from 100 to 500 degrees Fahrenheit, and it’s easy to read.
Large hopper capacity
The Pit Boss Austin XL has a large hopper capacity that can hold 31 pounds of wood pellets, making it easy to cook for large groups. The hopper can hold up to four servings of food at once, so you don’t need to add pellets after one cook. This is great for families and friends coming over for a meal or just wanting some leftovers to take home.
My personal experience with the Pit Boss Austin XL
The Pit Boss Austin XL Pellet Grill is a grill that is designed to offer the best in performance and usability. It has been designed with a lot of care and attention to detail; It has served me well in the past few months.
The construction of this grill is quite heavy-duty and sturdy, so I’m quite sure it will last for years to come without any problems.
The control panel on this grill is simple. However, the temperature displayed on it sometimes differs from the temperature displayed on the gauge thermometer, so I’d like to use my thermoworks signals for greater accuracy.

The cooking area of this grill is large enough for me to cook many things at once without having them overlap each other too much!
Pit Boss should work on two things to improve the Austin XL:
First, if they add a front shelf to this pellet grill, I’ll be able to place the meat in the front and put it directly into the cooking chamber. Even though the Austin XL now has a side shelf, I personally don’t find it very helpful.
Second, certain meats require smoking temperatures of 235 and 275 degrees Fahrenheit. Still, I can’t get these temperature settings on this grill with the temperature control, so I think it’d be great if they used a digital temperature readout in 5 increments, as other brands do.
